Local community leaders are pleased to host the 17th annual African-American Film Festival (AAFFat the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, which will take place on January the 3rd, February 4th and March 3rd of the year. The festival was founded by famous James Drayton, a former West Palm Beach city commissioner who was a tireless advocate of equal rights as well as justice. This festival is designed to celebrate African American culture, race relationships and social justice as well as honoring African American artists through groundbreaking film festivals. Every night, there is an insightful introduction to the film’s theme, moderated by a knowledgeable person.
In January, starting at : pm, we will be hosting an evening of the cult film “A Raisin in the sun” () which was written by Daniel Petrie. The film features Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil and tells the story of The Youngers (an African American family that live in an apartment in Chicago apartment) while they try to figure out what to do about their large insurance payments after the passing of their patriarch. TreaAndrea Russworm (PhD.) will host an interactive panel discussion with the viewers. The film will also feature William Nix Thomas Parham, and Avery Sommers.
On March , at : 2 pm on March 19, at 6 pm. Terri Francis will be moderating a panel featuring Eduardo Culmer, Jr., Breion Moses, and Dwayne Taylor. Ava Duvernay’s documentary, TH is the topic of discussion. It examines the American history of discrimination based on race and the reason African Americans are so heavily involved in the prison system. In addition, the panel will be discussing John Singleton’s film Poetic Justice, in which a mismatched pair – Justice (played by Jacksonand Lucky (Tupac Shakur- will reluctantly travel across South Central Los Angeles to Oakland.
NALES Film Festival exposes the deep-rooted racism. Nadine White Boyd, Esq. will moderate the event along with Alexis Lockhart, Reverend Kevin Jones and James Venable will serve as panelists. The reception will be catered inside the lobby of the Rinker Playhouse will precede the event. Past events have been presented by James Drayton, AnEta Sewell and William “Bill” Nix, they all collaborated in a careful process of analyzing, evaluating and develop a set of films which reflect recent issues and serve as facilitators of community discussion. Some of the films have a nostalgic feel and are among their best.
American Film Festival is proud to present with the support of WLRN Public Media, and local support from Kappa Upsilon Chapter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Tickets for rush tickets for students or educators are also offered for the entire screening. As moderators, you will find TreaAndrea M. Russworm, PhD. an interdisciplinary media scholar specialising in video games and other digital media.
Terri Francis works as an associate professor of Cinematic Arts, as well as an Associate Dean for Inclusion as well as Outreach. She is currently analyzing popular forms including Sidney Poitier films, Black mother-daughter family melodramas and Black pimp narratives , as well as Fat Albert post’s American popular stories.
