Gavin Brown – painting beautiful faces with a sinister shade

Gavin Brown is a Melbourne based artist who paints gorgeous faces with a hint of malevolence. Gavin Brown’s style is very subtle and his emphasis is on minimalism. His paintings are full of rich colors, while the people and scenarios are captured in graffiti like manner.

The plump faces and tattooed skin in Gavin’s art work are sketched with a contrast of birds, fruit and flowers. Everything is painted in extremely rich and fresh colors which totally contradict the original drama in the faces.

The colors chosen by Gavin are lush and cheerful yet the subject of his portraits is gloomy yet subtle. The expressions and eyes of these subjects hold some hints of menace and anguishing in them.

There is more than a hint of  inspiration from artists like Paul Gauguin, Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh who all belonged to different eras but their work carries the same impression. Gavin Brown’s work puts him in the same category, making one think that he might be an ancestor to these great artists.

Gavin Brown is a multi-talented artist and he maintains a career in fashion and other fields of art and design but he prefers to express himself through painting. Gavin’s work has been exhibited in more than 25 solo and group exhibitions.
